Our Beginnings

We started Formation Learning in March 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to re-imagine learning and the operations of schools. Together with Design Tech High School, we created a way students learn on their own terms while giving schools the tools to be efficient and accountable.

What is Formation Learning?

Formation is a school signup, task management, and scheduling platform that teachers, advisors, and students use every day to build individualized learning experiences by creating, signing up for, and scheduling activities in school and beyond.

In our world...

  • Teachers don’t define all learning activities—students propose some based on their individual learning goals.

  • Flextime is celebrated—learning activities and tasks are created, and scheduled, on an ongoing basis.

  • Learning happens anywhere. Concurrent enrollment, internships, clubs, and online classes through Coursera, Udacity, Outschool, and others supplement the regular course load.

Our Team

We’ve helped build amazing companies like SchoolMint, AltSchool, and GrubHub. Today, alongside Design Tech High School—what WIRED Magazine called “The Ultimate Incubator”—we’re creating an entirely new way for students and teachers to co-create individualized learning experiences.
